Make the most of your time off without breaking the bank by following these three lesser-known tips for saving money while traveling.
Check out coupon sites. Sure, you’re subscribed to Groupon and LivingSocial for your home city, but what about the places you’re planning to visit? If you know your destination a month or more ahead of time, it pays to sign up for e-mail notifications for deals to use while vacationing. While some deals, like carpet cleaning, are aimed at residents, others offer more than 50 percent off at restaurants, museums, and even spa and massage centers.
Time your flight booking just right. You already know to book flights a few months ahead to get the best deals, but did you know that there is a best time of day and week to book tickets? Wednesday from midnight to 1 a.m. (in the time zone of the airline’s home base) is the best time to buy a ticket.
Sound fishy? It’s not! We’ve personally used this method to save big on flights. The reason behind it is that during that hour-long span, airlines turn over unbooked reservations, releasing the lower fares.
Stay at (someone else’s) home. Hotel costs can considerably ratchet up the cost of a quick getaway. Cut back by forgoing maid service and crash at someone else’s house. Check out HomeAway or AirBnB for great deals (like $69/night for an entire apartment in Berlin, or $149/night for a penthouse apartment in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood).
