If you’re heading to Ireland and hoping to visit some castles while you’re there, Ireland’s Cahir Castle is one of the largest and offers a a true medieval experience at a great price.

This well-preserved castle was built in 1142 by Conor O’Brien, Prince of Thomond and is situated on an island in the Suir River. For those with a passion for medieval history, visiting Cahir Castle is an inexpensive venture and an ideal attraction to add to your itinerary, whether you prefer a guided tour or prefer to venture out on your own to explore.

The U.K. is ripe with history and plenty of castles to see, but among them, a visit to the Cahir Castle is surprisingly inexpensive. The cost is Euro 2.00 (less than $3.00 American) or Euro 8.00 for a family.

Available tours are led by well-informed guides who offer a presentation that’s both informative and entertaining. For those who want to learn more, a 15 minute AV presentation titled “Cahir Castle and the Story of Irish Castles” is offered at no extra fee. It is available in a number of languages including: English, Irish, French, German, and Italian.

Cahir Castle is truly opened to guests. You won’t find any roped-off areas. Instead, guests can enjoy the freedom to explore Cahir Castle on their own.

Climb the spiral staircases where ancient footfalls once traversed, or find your way into the prison holds in the belly of the castle. Overall, the castle offers a great sense of what living in a medieval castle was really like.

This is one stop worth making if you are  travelling anywhere near Cahir, Ireland. Limited access is available to visitors with disabilities, but you should call ahead as prior arrangements must be made.
