Weigh More Pay More on Samoa Air

Samoa Air charges by the pound — luggage plus you!

Samoa Air has announced what they call the fairest way to charge for flying – by the pound. They will charge passengers by their body weight, plus baggage weight with leeway within 2%.

This policy will allow kids to fly for less, and while people who are taller and weigh more will pay more, they will be given seats with more leg room. The policy went into effect last November for domestic flights and has been implemented for international routes a few weeks ago.

No Exorbitant Baggage Fees

The company’s website states “We at Samoa Air are keeping airfares fair, by charging our passengers only for what they weigh. You are the master of your Air’fair’, you decide how much (or little) your ticket will cost. No more exorbitant excess baggage fees, or being charged for baggage you may not carry. Your weight plus your baggage items, is what you pay for. Simple. The Sky’s the Limit!”

Child buckle seat belt

Children weigh less and so pay less.

While this is a simple concept, needless to say, this new policy has stirred some controversy, but the head of Samoa Air, Chris Langton, defended the policy as fair and suggested it is also the future for other airlines. He told CNN, “What makes airplanes work is weight. We are not selling seats, we are selling weight.”

Weight is a sensitive issue and using this as a criteria as to how much a person pays to fly works both ways. According to Langdon, “People who pay more deserve more.” This includes more leg room for taller people.

Samoa Air is a small carrier, and the pay by the pound policy seems a reasonable fare model. They fly two-seater, and four-seater planes among their fleet and weight restrictions are a practical problem for every flight.

Passengers Weighed with Luggage

Passengers have to be honest about their weight when booking because they and their luggage are weighed at the airport. The airline allows around 2% variance from the booking weight. This method of paying by weight eliminates crowded seating. People won’t be squished by overhang of larger people, and bigger people will be able to fly in comfort.
