All Aboard the Great Pumpkin Train

October 9, 2013 by

Great Pumpkin Train

The great Pumpkin Train offers an opportunity to enjoy stunning fall foliage along the Delaware River in the month of October. It’s a ride the whole family will enjoy, with a stop at a pumpkin patch at the historic Carpentersville Lime Kilns, which dates back to the 1700s, where the kids get to pick their own pumpkin.

The train runs from October 5th to the end of October on the weekends.

Steam Train

Tickets for the Great Pumpkin Train

A ride aboard the Great Pumpkin Train is an event organized by the New York Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society’s Delaware River Railroad Excursions. The steam train ride costs $17 for adults and $9 for kids. Trains run at 11:00 a.m., 12:30, 2:00, and 3:30 pm.

Corn Maze Add On

For added fun, passengers can choose add ons for an extra fee, like a corn maze train trip, a “dinosaur train,” and a mine train to the ole Susquehanna Mining Company. These optional add ons are available for $5.00 each at the time your ticket is purchased.

For more information check their website or call 877-872-474 (weekdays) or 908-454-4433 on the weekends.

Corn Maze Tips: The corn maze is a great event for people who enjoy exercise and plenty of fresh air. If you plan to take the corn maze train and have young children, organizers suggest the use of backpacks instead of strollers for babies and toddlers. A heavy-duty stroller with big wheels can work, but otherwise a regular stroller would not cover the uneven terrain.

Also, know ahead of time that there is no short cut or quick way out of this maze and it is not recommended for those who have certain health conditions.

Pan for gemstones.

Mine Train

The Mine Train offers an opportunity for gemstone panning. This is an activity enjoyed by all ages. Every mine train ticket receives one bag of mining ore from the Ole Susquehanna Mine. In each bag, miners have a chance to find up to 11 ounces of gemstones which might include: amethyst, rubies, rose, quartz, emeralds, crystals, and an arrowhead. All the gems are of high quality and suitable for polishing and mounting.

All trains run weekends until October 27th. It’s a beautiful ride on a historic train. Other rides are available throughout the year. Check their website for more information.

What family wouldn’t love a ride on an old steam train? And doing it in the fall seems perfect. Would love to check it out.
