If you’re visiting downtown Salem’s Riverfront Park in August, be sure to stop by A.C. Gilbert’s Discovery Village. This private nonprofit children’s museum was founded in 1989, and is a popular attraction that offers innovative and stimulating educational experiences designed to spark children’s natural curiosity.

The Village is made up of three historic houses: Rockenfield House, Gilbert House, and Parrish House, and the mission of this village is to “inspire children of all ages to learn and grow through play.”

China Exhibit Discovery Saturdays in August(free with admission):

The Gilbert’s Discovery Village has plenty of extras lined up for Saturdays in the month of August.

Animal Adaptations: August 3, 1–4 p.m.

Animal lovers will enjoy this opportunity to learn interesting and amazing facts about animals, including how they survive in their environment, and which animal can survive the sizzling heat of the Sahara Desert. Do you know?

Kids will find out fun facts like which animal is the fastest swimmer, how birds fly, and more.

Fossil Station: August 10, 1–4 p.m.

The village is looking for help in finding fossils in their 11,000-year-old fossil matrix. Kids will get to dig through the dirt to discover what’s been left behind as they learn what life was like so long ago.

Discover Oobleck: August 17, 1–4 p.m.

Children of all ages will enjoy learning about Ooobleck. Is it a solid or liquid? Good question. It looks like a liquid, but acts like a solid. Kids will not only learn about physical properties, but will also discover what it means when a substance acts in ways that may surprise us.

LED Lights and Wires: August 24, 1–4 p.m.

Kids will have a chance to make their own LED contraption to take home as they learn about these powerful, energy-efficient lights. Did you know they are fun to play with, too?

Nano: August 31, 1–4 p.m.

The last Discovery Saturday in August will explore the tiny world of Nano. Kids will see nano is everywhere, from air particles to 3D glasses.

Along with Discovery Saturdays, A.C. Gilbert’s Discovery Village offers learning programs, preschool activities, summer camps along with its exhibits and outdoor discovery center.
