Winterlude is a unique winter festival that takes place in Ottawa every year in the month of February. This amazing event offers tons of winter family fun for three consecutive weekends and is the perfect festival for families who enjoy winter sports and activities.
It’s so popular that it draws people from around the world. The 2014 Winterlude festival promises great fun including the Winterlude Triathlon, Annual Bed Race, Ice Carving Masters International, and more. Pack your skates and plan your trip to Ottawa for some winter fun.
Rideau Canal Skateway
One highlight of the Winterlude festival is the Rideau Canal Skateway – the world’s largest skating rink. Have fun skating through the heart of downtown on this 7.8 kilometers long scenic rink. It starts near Canada’s Parliament Buildings and takes skaters to Dows Lake.
Rest areas provide opportunities to warm up and rest a little along the way with fires, hot drinks, and tasty snacks.
The Winterlude Triathlon is one of the oldest Winterlude activities. It couples skating on the Rideau Canal with cross-country skiing and running. Distances include 8-km for skate, 5-km ski and 5-km run.
Annual Bed Race
The annual bed race has been part of the festival for years, and brings laughs from bystanders and participants as they race unique beds made for the event.
Ice-Carving Masters Invitational
Come watch the artistic talent of ice carving masters as they compete. Sculptures are made with 25 blocks of ice in 30 hours! There’s also a public ice carving challenge for amateur ice carvers. Registration is required.
Most Winterlude activities take place on the weekends. This includes learn-to-skate clinics, a hockey tournament, and children’s entertainment. The Snowflake Kingdom is a children’s playground opened through the week (except Tuesday and Wednesday).
When you work up an appetite with all these activities, guests can visit unique culinary events including the walkabout winter feasts! For a full schedule of 214 Winterlude events and activities check their website.
