Need an idea for a fun and educational weekend getaway for you and the kids? Try out a farm vacation! While this concept isn’t new in Europe, it is sweeping America by storm.
Weatherbury Farm, located just south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has opened it’s doors to this new trend. They are a certified organic farm, using sustainable practices to raise beef, lamb and chickens. They also harvest wheat, oats, corn, and other grains.
Make no mistake, Weatherbury is a working farm. A typical weekend stay here begins with morning chores, which last about 45 minutes, and can include pumping water for animals, bottle feeding baby cows or lambs, collecting eggs, and watering/weeding the garden.
After morning chores, breakfast is served, using the eggs you just gathered and freshly baked bread. After this, guests are welcome to kick back and relax, or to continue volunteering their hand for more farm life experience.
This is a great opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, and a great chance to reconnect with nature and the source of our food. You can revel in the simple pleasure of life on the farm while your children delight in the companionship of their new animal friends.
A two night stay for a family of 3 costs $427. This includes lodging, breakfast, and taxes. Visit Weatherbury Farm for more information.
