If you’re planning a New Jersey vacation with the kids, Insectropolis is one museum (or bugseum as they call it) you won’t want to miss. The theme is everything bugs with exhibits offering thousands of bugs from all over the world.

Exhibits are designed to appeal to young and old, bug lovers and bug haters, and lets visitors explore at their own pace on a self-guided tour.

Bug University

When visiting Insectropolis, the Bug University is a great place to start. Here, visitors learn bug basics. Kids will enjoy spinning the wheels of Metamorphosis and lifting the flaps of Phylum Arthropoda.

Before you leave, you’ll have a chance to visit the “class pets” and discover the various orders within Class Insecta. When you walk out, you’ll be able to list the characteristics all insects share.

Learning About Bugs Made Fun

The staff makes the visit to the Insectropolis fun and interesting. Along with displays and games on interactive educational computers, the termite tubes are a favorite attraction.

Here visitors learn about subterranean termites and their elaborate subway systems that let them travel from place to place. Kids can crawl through the tube for a termite’s point of view to catch a glimpse of what’s happening underground.

The Creepy Tavern exhibit is another popular choice. Here visitors learn that the tarantula’s creepy reputation is based on their large size and hairy bodies and legs.

In fact, these spiders are harmless to humans. While their bite can be painful, their venom is mild and weaker than a typical bee’s. Visitors will see how these spiders outgrow the exoskeleton in the molting process, too. It really is fascinating.

Hands On Presentations

During the summer months, “touch presentations” are scheduled at 11:00, 12:30, and 2:00 p.m. Whether you’re planning a day trip, a birthday celebration, or a field trip, Insectropolis is an inexpensive, fun place to take your kids at only $7.00 a person.
